TDV Street Fashion: Capoeira Kids

May 21st, 2006

Tribal!A short video of teenagers practicing Capoeira in Yoyogi park. According to Wikipedia, “Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period. It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It also has a strong acrobatic component in some versions and is always played with music.”

The kids in this video are pretty good; the hand-stand dancing impressed me. Other members of the group are playing traditional Capoeira instruments; the berimbaus and pandeiro.

The clip is a few years old so the physical size is small and the encoding a bit shoddy, but it contains a nice dance sequence and captures the mood of the day - carefree culturalism.. I dubbed the clip ‘Japafrizilian Vibes’..
